Jason Derting

Jason Derting has been teaching and judging marching band for over 20 years. He has marched with 3 finalists at Winter Guard International (WGI) including winning a world championship with Infiniti Winter Guard and Chimeras World Winter Guard. Jason was a clarinet and drummer in marching band and has experience teaching and designing band and color guard shows for various high schools in Virginia and Tennessee. Jason is currently an Adjudicator for the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA), Mid-Continental Color Guard Association (MCGC), and other winter guard circuits in the United States. He is entering his 3rd season as a WGI Equipment Judge this year. He adjudicates numerous marching band competitions annually in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. He resides in Fredericksburg, VA with his wife and 2 children, working as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Reiko Casteen

Reiko Casteen is a native of East Tennessee. She graduated from Daniel Boone High School, East Tennessee State University, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.  She has taught several guards (fall and indoor) throughout her career. Her judging experience includes serving as a movement caption judge in the Atlantic Indoor Association since 2004 and has been judging marching band competitions across the Southeastern US for the past 15 years. Her winter guard performing experience includes Daniel Boone High School from 1992-1995, Nuendo Winter Guard from 1996- 2000 where they were the WGI Bronze Medalists in 1996, and Infiniti World Winter Guard in 2003. Reiko’s drum corps experience includes marching with Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois from 1994 (3rd place), 1995 (5th place), and 1996 (DCI Gold Medalist). Reiko currently lives in Richmond, VA with husband and son.

Doug Casteen

Doug Casteen currently resides in Richmond, Virginia and is a graduate of North Carolina State University. He has been judging marching bands, drum corps and color guards for the last 25 years. He has been active as an adjudicator for many band associations across the US. He has recently judged state championships competitions for Oklahoma. Colorado, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. He is currently the Chief Judge for the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) where he inducted in the AIA Hall of Honor in 2006 for his contributions to the circuit. He is the current Chief Judge for the Virginia Marching Band Cooperative (VMBC). He has judged all visual captions for Drum Corps International (DCI) and currently judges for the Winds Division of Winter Guard International (WGI). He served as a General Effect Judge for Color Guard Division of WGI for 12 seasons where he judged over 40 Regional Championships and 6 World Championships. His performing experience includes marching in DCI with Avant Garde from Saratoga Springs, NY, the 27th Lancers from Revere, MA, and the Star of Indiana from Bloomington, IN. He performed the Star Alumni Drum Corps in 2004 and 2010. He has instructed various marching bands, winter guards, and drum corps throughout the Southeastern US.   

Carl Bly

Carl Bly taught for 30 years at Centreville High School and Lake Braddock Secondary School in Fairfax County, VA, and was Concert Band and Orchestra Director at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Currently Mr. Bly is Adjunct Assistant Professor at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. Mr. Bly’s concert and marching bands have enjoyed international reputations. In addition to the many awards received by his marching bands, Mr. Bly’s bands have been a finalist at the Bands of America’s Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, IN. His Concert Bands have performed at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago and Bands of America’s National Concert Band Festival, and in the concert halls of the Kennedy Center, DAR Constitution Hall, at Wolf Trap, and the Legrande Theatre in Quebec, Canada. Mr. Bly conducts numerous clinics yearly with both concert and marching bands and conducts regularly All-District and All-State Events. He has held numerous state and national positions in professional organizations. Carl is a long time judge with Drum Corps International and Bands of America.

Justin Johnson

Justin Johnson is a performer and composer within the areas of percussion and has been a part of the marching arts for over 10 years. Justin received a Master's degree in Percussion Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has a Bachelor of Science in Music, with an emphasis in Music Education and Performance from Radford University. During his undergraduate studies, Justin participated in the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble/Combos, Percussion Ensemble, and Pep Band. During his graduate studies, he participated in the Symphonic Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, and recorded with the Wind Ensemble on several released albums. He has also performed in outside ensembles such as the Virginia Helmsmen Indoor Percussion Ensemble, the Standing Room Only Jazz Orchestra, Urban Essence/Bernard Hairston Group, and Atlanta CV Drum & Bugle Corps where he also won first place in DCA I&E drum set. Currently Justin resides in Greensboro, NC as the current director of the Titans Drumline at Guilford Technical Community College, battery arranger for Duke University, technical support analyst for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is married to Tierra Coleman Johnson.

Rob Carroll

Rob Carroll served as Band Director at Great Bridge High School from 1988 to 2015. Prior to that, he served as Band Director at Stonewall Middle School in Prince William County from 1985 to 1988. Currently, he serves the Great Bridge Band Program as an instrumental music teacher at the middle school.  He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University and Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois.

He is a Past President of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. In 2008, Rob was inducted into the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Legion of Honor. He was honored with the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Virginia Music Educators Association in 2011.

 

​He maintains active memberships in MENC, VMEA, VBODA, the National Band Association, and the International Horn Society. Additionally, he is an active performer, private instructor and member of the Virginia Wind Symphony.

Beverly Massengill-Campbell

Beverly Massengill-Campbell is a native of Bristol, TN. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from East Tennessee State University (Johnson City, TN) and her Master of Music Education Degree from VanderCook College of Music (Chicago Illinois). Ms. Campbell has been teaching for 33 years producing award winning High School and Middle School Concert Bands, Marching Bands, Winter Guards and Indoor Drum lines. She served on the Board of Directors of the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Directors Association of which she was a member for many years. Currently Mrs. Campbell is a member of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, National Association for Music Educators, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. This is Ms. Campbell’s 15th year as band director at E.B. Stanley Middle School . She currently has over 240 students in grades 6-8 which is over a third of the total enrollment at the school. Beverly stays active in the high school band arena by programming and designing high school band field shows and judging Marching Band, Concert Band, WinterGuard and Indoor Drumline competitions throughout the South.

Robert Wall

Bob Wall is from Middletown, VA and is a nationally recognized public safety professional with extensive experience developing and managing traffic and other public safety and educational programs. Bob coordinated the child passenger safety training and traffic safety public information and education programs for the Fairfax County Police Department.  In the Commonwealth of Virginia Wall has been active as a consultant to the International and Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, coordinating and assisting with several highway programs. As the coordinator of the IACP National and Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge, Bob made the Virginia state program one of the premier state traffic safety programs in the country.

 

Bob is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and an alumnus of the two-time DCI World Champion, Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps. His pageantry experience incubuses over 15 years of instructing the Lake Braddock Secondary Marching Band in Burke, VA as well as instructing or consulting many other marching bands and winter guards in the Commonwealth for more than 25 years. Mt Vernon High School, Madison High School, Thomas Jefferson High Schools and Centerville High School are only some of the schools he has instructed or consulted over the years. His judging experience also spans many years in Virginia and nationwide.        

 

After his retirement, Wall also committed himself to the development of youth. As the Executive Director of the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc, in Madison Wisconsin. He coordinated over 200 instructors and volunteers and three drum and bugle corps with over 500 young adults. The Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps or Lexington, KY, The Capitol Sound Drum & Bugle Corps, Madison, WI and the Madison Scouts, Madison, WI, activities were coordinated and directed by Bob. The Madison Scouts placed 8th in the DCI World Championships and the Capitol Sound were in finals for the first time ever in the A class at the DCI Championships. Southwind was in the DCI Associates placement for the first time ever, in 20th place.    

 

He recently retired, again, as the Public Education Coordinator with the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue. Bob is now the Global Car Seat Safety Advocate for Wonderland Manufacturing, representing NUNA Baby Essentials. In 1993 Bob received the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s highest award for outstanding achievements in highway safety, the J. Stannard Baker Award.
